Our Specialty Services for Adults & Teens
Consultations & Assessments
We offer free consultations prior to scheduling an assessment. This allows us to identify your specific needs in order to tailor the assessment to you.
We will then meet for an assessment. Assessments consist of an interview with the client and/or family, standardized measures, and informal testing. Most assessments take between 1 and 1.5 hours, and results and our recommendations will be reviewed in detail at the end of the appointment.
Cognitive-Communication
Therapy focused on cognitive-communication takes place in a collaborative environment where clients receive education, instruction, direct training, and opportunities for practice. We also dedicate time for feedback and communication partner training. Using real-life practice, role-play scenarios, and community outings, we will help you or your loved one improve cognitive-communication skills such as: - word-finding - ability to express themselves - remembering and understanding information - engaging in and sustaining conversation - improving ability to organize thoughts in writing - planning, organizing, and prioritizing tasks - how to weigh options, identify consequences, and make decisions - building confidence in social situations - successfully returning to school or work (and life!)
Language
(Aphasia)
When providing language therapy for aphasia, we take a person-centered approach, focusing on meaningful and relevant topics and personal interests. Throughout the therapy process, we will use evidence-based approaches in structured and unstructured tasks to help clients regain important communication skills and transfer those skills to "real life." Therapy also includes client and caregiver training, instruction, home programming, and time for questions and answers. When appropriate we will also use AAC to support communication. Clients will regain and develop skills such as: - understanding how to repair a communication breakdown - increasing their verbal expression and auditory comprehension - improved reading and writing abilities - how to use multi-modal communication Our goal is to help clients increase their confidence, participation, connection, and independence.
Motor Speech
(Apraxia & Dysarthria)
Speech therapy for apraxia and dysarthria begins by collaboratively identifying meaningful words and topics to target during therapy. We use both structured and unstructured therapy tasks to improve overall speech. Our goal is to help our clients build motor plans for saying words and sounds, learn strategies and tools, and transfer these skills to functional communication and conversation. Time is dedicated to client and caregiver training and setting up home practice programs. When appropriate, we will also use AAC to support communication. Speech therapy for acquired motor speech disorders will help you or your loved one develop: - clearer speech - increased confidence - improved functional communication - increased participation in activities of choice - ability to participate in social gatherings - decreased frustration - ability to repair communication breakdowns
